Description
Gamusa is a traditional Assamese cotton towel that is an integral part of Assamese culture and heritage. It is an essential accessory in every Assamese household and is used for a variety of purposes, from wiping sweat to decorating homes during festivals.
The word ‘gamusa’ is derived from two Assamese words, 'ga' meaning body and 'musa' meaning wipe. Hence, it translates to a cloth used to wipe the body. The gamusa is usually a rectangular piece of cotton cloth, with a length of 4 to 5 feet and a width of 2 to 3 feet. It is predominantly white in color, with a red border and intricate designs woven or embroidered on it.
The traditional gamusa is made of pure cotton, which makes it soft, lightweight, and absorbent. The red border, known as 'liphap', is often made of silk or cotton and is intricately designed with motifs and patterns.
