Description
Gamusa is a traditional piece of cloth that is an essential part of Assamese culture and tradition. It is a symbol of the Assamese identity and is widely used in daily life, festivals, and ceremonies. The word 'gamusa' is derived from the Assamese word "ga", which means "body", and "musaa", which means "wipe". Gamusa is believed to have been originated from the ancient tradition of using a piece of cloth to wipe the sweat and dirt from the body after a hard day's work. Traditionally, gamusa is made of cotton or silk fabric with intricate designs and patterns woven into it. The most popular design is the red and white striped pattern, which is known as 'mekhela sador'. The red color symbolizes fertility, while the white represents purity and peace. The length of a gamusa can vary from 2 to 3 feet and the width is usually about 1 to 1. 5 feet.
