Description
v. Arizona
Miranda v. Arizona was a landmark United States Supreme Court case that established the principle that criminal suspects must be informed of their constitutional rights before they are interrogated by law enforcement. This case had a major impact on the criminal justice system and has become a cornerstone of American law.
The case began in 1963 when Ernesto Miranda, a 23-year-old man with a criminal record, was arrested by the Phoenix Police Department for kidnapping and rape. Miranda was taken into custody and interrogated for two hours without being informed of his rights. During this interrogation, he confessed to the crimes and signed a written statement without knowing that he had the right to remain silent or to have an attorney present.
At trial, Miranda''s confession was used as evidence against him and he was convicted and sentenced to 20-30 years in prison.
