It originates from the state of West Bengal, known for its rich culture and handloom traditions. The word Ikkat is derived from the Malay word "mengikat" which means to tie or bind. In this technique, the yarns are tied and dyed before weaving, creating elaborate patterns and designs on the fabric. The process of making an Ikkat saree begins with the design. The weavers first create a paper blueprint or chart of the design, which is then transferred onto the warp and weft threads of the saree. The threads are then tied in specific patterns using wax or rubber resist to prevent the dye from penetrating the tied areas. The tied threads are then dyed in a particular color. This process is repeated for each color and design in the saree.
