Description
Mekhela Sadar is a traditional Assamese handloom garment worn by women in the state of Assam in India. It is a two-piece ensemble consisting of a skirt-like lower garment called the mekhela and a wraparound cloth called the chadar. Mekhela Sadar is also known as Mekhela Sador, Mekhela Chador or Rani Phi among the Assamese people.
The Mekhela:
The Mekhela is the lower garment of the ensemble. It is a long rectangular cloth of about 2. 5 meters in length and a width of around 1 meter. It is worn by draping it around the waist and then pleating it and tucking it into the waistband. It is worn over a petticoat or inner skirt called the parkar or mekhela peti.
