Description
The Kosi River, also known as the Saptakoshi River, is a major river in the Indian subcontinent. It originates in the Himalayas in Tibet and flows through Nepal and India before eventually joining the Ganges River in northern Bihar, India.
The Kosi River is formed by the confluence of seven smaller tributaries, hence its name "Saptakoshi" which means "seven rivers" in Sanskrit. It has a total length of approximately 720 kilometers and drains an area of 74,500 square kilometers.
The river is known for its highly dynamic nature, with a constantly shifting course and frequent floods. This is due to the large amount of sediment it carries from the Himalayas, making it one of the most sediment-laden rivers in the world. The constant deposition of sediment has created a fertile floodplain, known as the Kosi Basin, which supports agriculture and human settlements.
