Description
''s roleZia ul-Haq was a Pakistani army general and politician who served as the 6th President of Pakistan from 1978 until his death in 1988. His rule had a profound impact on the country, both politically and socially.
Zia''s rise to power began in 1977 when he staged a military coup against the civilian government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He justified this action by citing the political instability and economic turmoil in the country. Zia suspended the constitution, dissolved the National Assembly, and imposed martial law.
As President, Zia implemented a number of major policies and reforms that significantly changed the fabric of Pakistani society. He introduced Islamization as a state policy, seeking to make Pakistan a more Islamic state. This included the introduction of Islamic laws, such as the Hudood Ordinances, which enforced strict punishments for crimes such as adultery and theft.
