Bhagirathi

Bhagirathi is a sacred river in northern India that originates from the Gangotri Glacier in the state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the main tributaries of the Ganges River and is considered to be one of the most important and holy rivers in Hinduism. According to Hindu mythology, Bhagirathi is named after King Bhagiratha, an ancestor of Lord Rama, who meditated and performed penance for many years to please the gods and bring the river Ganges down from heaven to earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. It is believed that Bhagiratha''s prayers were answered and the river Ganges descended from the heavens and flowed through Bhagirathi, before merging with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag to become the Ganges.
